Pharmacia telehealth answer

Should I choose a phone or video telehealth consultation?

Both phone and video support real-time care; video can provide more visual information when practical, but neither replaces an examination when one is needed.

Quick answer

Choose the method you can use reliably and privately. Video can give the doctor additional visual information and is preferred by the Medical Board when practical. A phone consultation may still be appropriate, but the doctor must continually decide whether telehealth provides enough information for safe care.

When video may be useful

  • The doctor may benefit from seeing you or something you can safely show on camera.
  • You have a reliable internet connection, working camera and private space.
  • You are comfortable using the video controls provided for the appointment.

When phone may be practical

  • Your connection is not reliable enough for video.
  • The booking concern can be assessed without visual information, subject to the doctor's judgement.
  • You can answer the call in a private place at the appointment time.

The doctor may change the next step

Selecting phone or video does not make telehealth suitable for every concern. The doctor may recommend video, an in-person examination, testing, urgent care or another provider when needed.
